In the note, sent to Lusa agency, the Navy stated that it monitored the ship "Akademik Aleksandr Karpinskiy" in the Madeira Exclusive Economic Zone from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon.


The Navy highlighted that this type of operation aims to “guarantee that no harmful activities are carried out for the country and to promote and protect Portugal's interests at and through the sea”.

“Serving Portugal at sea, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, the Navy will continue to monitor and accompany the passage of this type of ship, carrying out permanent patrol of maritime spaces under national sovereignty or jurisdiction”.
