According to Jornal de Notícias, which cites a survey by the Intervention Service for Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies, the percentage of young people who admit to consuming alcohol on a daily basis increased from 10 to 13% between 2021 and 2022.

The survey also reported by Notícias ao Minuto shows that this is the highest value in the last seven years.

The Alentejo stands out from the rest of the country's regions by recording the highest prevalence of harmful behaviours related to the intake of alcoholic beverages ('binge' and severe drunkenness).

In turn, Madeira stands out as the region where the situation worsened the most, with increases of 8 percentage points in terms of both 'binge' consumption and severe drunkenness and 7 percentage points in terms of drinking alcoholic drinks on a daily or almost daily basis.

Drug use

Lisbon and the Algarve are the regions of the country with the highest consumption of illicit drugs, while Madeira (and also the Azores, in the case of the last 12 months and last 30 days) records the lowest prevalence.

However, this only applies to illicit drugs as a whole and to cannabis, which is the most consumed illicit drug in all regions. On the other hand, with regard to illicit substances other than cannabis, consumption is more prevalent in the Autonomous Regions, except with regard to amphetamines / methamphetamines, as in this case, the prevalence is slightly more prevalent in Alentejo.
