Eel Population

The Mainichi partnered with the Research Institute of Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries in the Osaka Prefecture to conduct a study on the Dotonburi River.

They managed to catch 11 individuals from the highly polluted river, which was the first time eels had been caught under scientific observation at the location, representing a shining example of resilience.

Last year, near the end a family vacation in Japan, I went off on my own to look for local stories. I stumbled upon a cool one in Osaka—the iconic Dotonburi River is hiding an endangered yet familiar species: Japanese eels!
