In a publication on its official page, Porto City Council clarifies that circulation will be interrupted “as a precaution and to safeguard the safety of people and goods”, given the predicted precipitation, wind and strong sea agitation.

Circulation in that area of the Douro bar will be interrupted on Thursday 7 March from 7 pm and should remain that way until Saturday 9 March, the day on which a reassessment of the situation is planned.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), between 03:00 and 09:00 on Thursday 7 March, as well as between 15:00 and 18:00 on Friday 8 March, periods of rain are expected.

On Friday 8 March, gusts of up to 80 km/h are expected, between 15:00 pm and 18:00 pm, and waves from the west/northwest with five to six meters in height, with a maximum height of 11 meters.

“In view of IPMA forecasts, an increase in the risk of coastal overtopping is expected during periods of the high tide”, warns the municipality.

Municipal Civil Protection therefore recommends that the population respect the security perimeters established along the coastline and access to jetties and beaches.

Municipal services urge the population to be especially careful when traveling near the coastline and riverside areas, and not to practice activities related to the sea, such as sport fishing, water sports or walks along the seaside.

Avoiding parking vehicles close to the coast, as well as paying special attention to the warnings issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
