This suggestion is part of a draft resolution that has already been delivered to the Assembly of the Republic by the BE parliamentary group to be discussed and voted on by deputies. Blockers Fabian Figueiredo, Joana Mortágua, Isabel Pires, José Soeiro, and Mariana Mortágua excluded flights with international origins or destinations or in autonomous regions from the recommendation.
The deputies therefore propose that the Assembly of the Republic recommends to the Government “the progressive and total replacement, by 2026, of domestic connections between the airports of Porto and Lisbon, and between the airports of Lisbon and Faro by reinforced, fast railway connections and affordable prices.” They also call for the “progressive and total replacement, by 2030, of domestic connections between Porto and Faro airports with reinforced, fast and affordable rail connections”.
BE considers that “the railway must be a priority and a reorganisation must begin to replace, reduce and finally ban air connections between these three airports”.

Ridiculous. So stupid. So what are people flying into Lisbon, an airport they want shut down, as sell, to do? Take all their luggage, kids, etc, via road going vehicle, to a train, then go to Faro or Porto, then onto another road going vehicle, to their lodging? Sounds so green.
The Green/Left need to wake up.

I fully agree with this as a climate change and economic strategy. There will need to be a review on public transport feeder services to rail stations and probably park and ride facilities.

This would create more direct flights to Faro, which means that this little airport needs to expand or it will be (even more) overwhelmed. And more direct flights to Faro… I’m not sure that a solution that forces airlines to change routes reduces the greenhouse gas emissions in the way the Left hopes.

I dont agree the distance is to far between the major international airports. Makes no sense from airport-automobile-train-automobile- to destinations

This suggestion would be less clunky if Portugal embraced the air-rail synergy applied elsewhere in Europe: mainline train connections at the airport terminals. That would be hugely expensive, of course, but I don't think we'll see public buy-in for required plane-to-train transfers without it.

Now travelling by train between Faro and Porto takes six hours, by plane takes 60 minutes. In 2030, with a eurostar equivalent train, it will still take four hours Faro-Porto. BE parliament members must all live in Lisbon...

To make this idea appealing, we need to set aside the ban on domestic flights and focus on developing the railway network. Yes to underground stations at airports, yes to high-speed trains (Faro-Porto in less than three hours), yes to a modern rail network that allows everyone to choose to travel by train faster than by car or coach, yes to clean, modern, and attractive stations in the centres of Portuguese cities, across the entire country! Yes to establishing infrastructure that allows each individual to choose their mode of transport and contributes to national economic development. Yes to an ambition that allows Portugal to escape its stagnation! Yes to large-scale projects that benefit the entire population, and not just a few economic minorities obscuring reality.
