From a small initial group of five players, the club now has close to twenty members ranging from the age of 50 to 80. This sport is relatively new to the Algarve although there are now teams throughout the area, and tournaments are regularly held.

As its name suggests, the game is closely related to traditional football but without the running and physical contact. The skill level is often high as many ex-footballers, who perhaps feel too old to run around for ninety minutes, eagerly take to this game. However, it is also aimed at the less experienced player who just wants to keep fit, have fun and forge friendships.

Tony Wyld, club founder, explains, ‘We play every Wednesday morning from 10 am to 12 pm and we welcome new members. We are an all-inclusive club where having fun is our mission. Last week we were privileged to have in attendance Dave Waller, Algarve walking football referee, who was able to impart some of his knowledge and experience.’

Phil Thorpe, committee member and newcomer to the sport, who has been playing from the first session, says, ‘ At sixty I was introduced to walking football, being a non-footballer, and at first I thought I wouldn’t be any good at it. I tried it. What a complete surprise. I loved it. I met new people and I would encourage anyone with doubts to give it a chance.’
