Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that Charles III would temporarily suspend his public duties after being diagnosed with cancer.

"Following the news of King Charles III's health diagnosis, the President of the Republic wished the British monarch a quick and complete recovery", reads a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, attended the coronation of King Charles III in London, on May 6 last year.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa wished the new monarch happiness, considering that he would begin his reign in "very difficult" conditions, compared to those at the beginning of his mother's reign.

"The happiness of the United Kingdom will be the happiness of Portugal and the happiness of the alliance between Portugal and the United Kingdom", he stated at the time.
