In this second edition of the event, curated by João Leandro, Ricardo José Lopes and Selma Uamusse, renowned Portuguese-speaking musicians of African decent such as Alex d’Alva Teixeira, Amaura, Anastácia Carvalho, Djodje, Almeida, Gabe, Gospel Collective, Héber Marques, Karyna Gomes, Matay, Mirza Lauchand, Nayr Faquirá, NBC, Orlanda Guilande, Raissa, Selma Uamusse, Soraia Morais, and Vincente Augusto, will be interpreting some of the most famous themes which originated from the African-American Communities of the 60’s and 70’s.

This program is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Music Diplomatic Initiative which uses the power of music to build connections, peace, and mutual understanding among all people in celebration of Black History Month. Laurin Talese, an American jazz reference, will perform on behalf of the Arts Envoy and Global Music Diplomacy Initiative programs.

In the words of Ambassador Randi Charno Levine, “The month of February is dedicated to the annual celebration of the achievements of African Americans and a time to recognise their central role in U.S history. African American music has always been a means of addressing hard truths. The US Embassy and I are very happy that these talented Portuguese-speaking musicians want to celebrate Black History Month with us”.

The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, highlights “It is with great satisfaction that the Lisbon City Council is associated with this significant celebration, which pays homage to the African American generations, giving visibility and importance to their achievements throughout the history of USA. We also feel great pride in the various Afro-descendant communities that contribute greatly to the strength of Lusophone culture. It is an honour for Lisbon, with this initiative to strengthen the intercultural bridges between Portugal and USA”.

Free tickets will be available to the public on February 27, from 3pm, and can be collected at the São João Theater box office (limit of two tickets per person). The doors to the concert will open at 6.30pm.
