According to a report by Sul Informação, a total of 300 cubic metres of seaweed has been deposited on the beach following bad weather brought on by storm Danielle, with the newspaper speculating that the seaweed is likely to be an invasive species of Asian origin that has already affected other local beaches.

The seaweed mainly affected the beaches of Carvoeiro, Vale Centeanes, Caneiros and Pintadinho, on the coast of Lagoa, as well as the eastern part of Praia da Rocha, in Portimão.

Luís Encarnação, mayor of Lagoa, told Sul Informação, that the council is preparing to remove all of the seaweed as part of a mega cleaning operation. "It is a natural phenomenon, aggravated by the fact that it is due to an invasive species and the same scenario is seen throughout the coast of the Algarve and Spain”.

“We are, however, having great difficulties considering the dimension” of the problem, added the mayor, in statements to Sul Informação.

“We estimate that the total amount of algae deposited on Praia de Carvoeiro is around 300 cubic meters. In addition, it is not possible to bring machines to the beach,” said Luís Encarnação.

300 cubic meters of algae represent around 30 trucks that will have to be loaded, just from Praia do Carvoeiro, in an operation that could take a few days.
