His father abandoned the family and they had a hard time as poor and outcast. Later on, his father came back and then had his children educated. Martin took up the study of medicine.

When Martin was 22 he was received into the Dominican priory in Lima. Some years later he was professed as a brother.

During his 40 years as a Dominican, he gave his life to humble duties. He fed the hungry, gave to charity, brought food to the poor and used his medical skills for the relief of suffering.

He built an orphanage and a hospital. He had a great love of animals.

Martin died in 1639. He was canonised in 1962 and his feast day is 3 November.
